On July 30, 2021, Professor Huang Sanwen, Director of Agricultural Genomics Institute at Shenzhen, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, was invited by IBP to delivers aBei Shizhang LectureentitledGenome Design of hybrid Potato. The lecture was hosted by Prof. Li Guohong and attracted a large number of researchers and students.

Professor Huang Sanwen is mainly engaged in vegetable genetical breeding and plant genomics research. His groups created a type of potato, which was diploids and propagated in the form of seeds. This plan, named Youshu (qualified potato) No.1 was hailed as a "revolution in the history of potato breeding". Professor Huang has won the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award, the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, and the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. He is also the chief scientist of the National 973 Project, the Vice President of the Chinese Society for Plant Biology, and a member of the Academic Advisory Board of Cell. Professor Huang has published more than 110 SCI papers and 13 papers inCell, Nature, Science and Nature Geneticsas the corresponding author. He was selected as the 2020 Global Highly Cited Scholar byClarivate Analyticsand 2020 China Highly Cited Scholar byElsevier.

In the report, Professor Huang shared his experience in vegetable and potato breeding. His group revealed the mechanism of synergistic expression of bitter taste regulatory gene clusters in cucumber, and thus selected delicious cucumber varieties with good taste. In order to improve tomato flavor, Huang's team discovered the chemical and genetic basis of tomato flavor through research on plant trait genetics and molecular biology, and his delicious tomatoes were welcomed both at home and abroad. Finally, Professor Huang told the story of cultivation of the type of potato "YouShu", which was selected as one of the world's Top Ten Science and Technology Progress News in 2011.
